Cleaning Your Vinyl Siding

It is easy to restore that shiny look to your vinyl siding after it begins to fade and dull. A simple washing of the siding will clean off years of grime and though it can take some hard work, will keep your home looking as beautiful as the day the siding was replaced. To clean vinyl siding, you can use either a pressure washer, or some elbow grease combined with a bucket of soapy water and a scrub brush. While both will get the siding sparkly clean again, your time, budget and physical abilities will likely influence which option you choose.

Obviously, you will want to choose a pressure washer if you are short on time, have physical limitations which may make it hard to exert yourself constantly, or if you have a large surface area to cover (i.e. your home is large). The disadvantage of using a pressure washer is that you may not have one handy, and they can be costly. In addition, using one improperly can drive water underneath the siding and put your home at risk for excess moisture which can lead to mold and mildew.

If you have the physical stamina and time to hand wash your siding, you only need some mild soap, a hose, and a brush with bristles strong enough to get the grime off and soft enough to not cause damage to the vinyl. However, using the hands-on method will prevent you from inadvertently pushing water into the siding seams and you therefore avoid the possibility of mold growth.

Prepping the Surface

  • It’s important to cover any exterior light surfaces, electrical outlets or other surfaces that can be damaged by water.
  • Move or cover any plants or landscaping that you do not want to get damaged or flooded with excessive water.
  • To check for mold, apply bleach to any dark spots you may find. If the result is positive, the spot will turn white, whereas it will stay dark if it is simply dirt.
  • Mold or mildew should be treated and eliminated before washing the surface.

Using a Pressure Washer

  • Mild soap such as dish detergent works best. Fill the pressure washer tank with a solution of warm water and mild detergent, being careful not to use too much soap.
  • When cleaning, work your way from the bottom to the top of the siding, pointing the nozzle up at a 45* angle.
  • Do not point the nozzle directly at the wall or at joints around doors or windows. Doing this can force water into the seams.
  • Avoid working in direct sunlight, as it can dry the soap on the siding before you get a chance to wash it off with water.
  • Work in a small section at a time, soaping and then rinsing before it dries.

Using a Hose, Brush and Bucket

Use the same type of solution you would use with a pressure washer.

Simply hose down the siding to wet it before cleaning.

Work your way from bottom to top, using a long-handled brush to dip into the cleaning solution and apply it to the siding.

Rinse thoroughly with the hose to remove soap.

Just as you would with a pressure washer, work in small sections at a time.
